“The anger is widely spread” in Lebanon, says @DMiliband. “There's anger at Hezbollah for dragging Lebanon into the war. There's anger at Israel for the way in which it's conducting the campaign. There's anger at America. There's anger at their own government. There's a lot of an…
“The great fear in Beirut last week when I was there was that Lebanon would be left out of a deal to end the war in Iran. And the tragedy is that it looks like that fear is now being borne out,” says @RESCUEorg CEO @DMiliband. “I got a text just earlier saying this is the bloodie…
“There are a lot of voices within Iran today, particularly in the security services, that are talking about returning to the original principles of the revolution, self-reliance and self-dependence, and that leads only to one direction: an autonomous nuclear capability,” warns Ra…
“The Iranian people are, as has been the case for at least 47 years, really in the losing situation here. They have risked their lives countless times,” says @MaloneySuzanne. “It is incumbent on the world to ensure that their cause is not forgotten, that we continue to look for…
“The level of Iranian program that’s been set back and the defense forces that have been set back, that’s real,” says Iranian-American analyst Ray Takeyh. “It will take a long time for Iran to recover from 13,000 American strikes on their targets and the decapitation of many of t…
"It's very clear to me... that the Israeli offensive [on Lebanon] right now is completely counterproductive... the only thing that Israel is achieving is giving Hezbollah, which has already been significantly weakened, a new lease of life." Greek PM @kmitsotakis tells me "we have…
As a shaky ceasefire comes into effect, I ask former Iranian government official Sasan Karimi where peace talks might go, about the outcome of this war, and what this all means for the Iranian people, with arrests and executions already taking place.
“Lindsey [Ferrentino] wrote an incredible play… The words were so moving that they pulled me out of my own apprehension of doing theater for many years and getting back up.” Adrien Brody explains to me what compelled him to make his Broadway debut in “The Fear of 13”.
Looking back on the Iran hostage crisis, “nobody has ever forgiven them for it. And I can’t forgive them either,” says former Carter aide Gary Sick. “It was a stupid thing to do and it was hugely costly.”
“With everything we do, we are undercutting the laws of war,” says former NSC official Gary Sick. At 91, he reflects, “I would never have believed that we would find ourselves in the position that we’re in, as the rogue nation in the world.”
Failing to anticipate the Islamic revolution and the fall of the Shah “was one of the greatest intelligence failures in American history,” says Gary Sick, who advised Ford, Carter and Reagan on Iran. 47 years on, he reflects on what the US got wrong, and lessons for today.
“I was an intelligence officer for years and years in the Navy and we were told unequivocally that the United States is not in the business of assassination,” says former NSC staffer Gary Sick, now 91. “Assassination is not an answer.”
“Clearly this was done on a whim, without a lot of thinking,” says former NSC staffer Gary Sick, of the ongoing US-Israeli war with Iran. “And we’re seeing the consequences… Trump… plays a tactical game. He’s got problems and he deals with them impulsively.”
I speak with Iran scholar @vali_nasr about how President Trump’s own actions could make it harder for him to negotiate with Iran: “President Trump has to deal with the legacy of distrust that he himself has created,” Nasr says.
“If the [Iranian] regime is left in power… then we are definitely going to have to rethink our footprint in the Middle East,” warns former Pentagon and State spokesman John Kirby. “Clearly, even a degraded, greatly diminished Iran… can still lash out and strike at civilian and…
Talk of bombing Iran “back to the stone ages where they belong” angers Iranians deeply proud of their 2,500-year history. And by targeting reform-era foreign minister Kamal Kharazi, where is the diplomatic off-ramp? Or is America heading for a constant war footing?
Iran’s political prisoners are particularly vulnerable right now, caught between bombs and the regime. A new animated short documentary, That Night, helps shed a light on the voices of those trapped behind bars. It focuses on a fire at Evin Prison in 2022, and director Hoda Sobha…
“History is ruthless, it doesn’t judge us by the effort, it judges us by the outcome,” says former Ukrainian Foreign Minister @DmytroKuleba. “There is a long way for Europe to go. I do believe they’re trying their best, but there are some issues they have to address immediately…
“Russia has zero incentive to make peace now,” says Ukraine’s former Foreign Minister @DmytroKuleba. “As long as there are no driving forces for peace on the Russian side and for the change of attitude on the American side, Ukraine’s tweets will be falling on deaf ears.”
“There’s the real possibility that a determined Iran, if it really wanted to build a nuclear weapon, could do so,” warns fmr. State Dept official Jon Alterman. “The fear is that this operation makes this more likely, rather than less likely, given that perhaps an even more hardli…
Former State Department official Jon Alterman is warning the US against adopting Israel’s “mowing the grass” strategy: “That’s not the way the US has treated problems around the world,” he says, and could result in “having a war with Iran every few years.”
On 29 March–after weeks of persistent follow-up and despite the compounded difficulties amid the armed conflict and shutdown of virtually all forms of communications by the Iranian government, Mohammadi’s legal team, accompanied by one family member, visited her in Zanjan Prison
The Free Narges Coalition is gravely concerned regarding the well-being and denial of independent medical care for Narges Mohammadi, based on recent reports received from Iran. On 29 March–after weeks of persistent follow-up and despite the compounded difficulties amid the armed
“If the regime survives, they will go after their most dangerous enemies: that’s the Iranian people,” says Hamidreza Mohammadi, brother of Nobel laureate @nargesfnd. “Because the attacks might stop, but the Iranian people [will] not stop… They don’t want this regime to remain.”
“Political prisoners are in fact the most vulnerable people in Iran now,” says Hamidreza Mohammadi, brother of Nobel laureate @nargesfnd, with the IRGC replacing regular prison guards and a lack of food and water. “The situation in the prisons [is] really worrying.”
With the Iran war inflicting an extraordinary energy crisis on the world, could this accelerate a move away from fossil fuels? Environmentalist Bill McKibben hopes so: “It’s geopolitically sound,” he argues, and “it’s cheaper.”
Last night, the lights went dark on the West End and Broadway in honor of a true giant of the theatre: Robert Fox, who died last week at the age of 73. His wife Fiona told us that she and his family “couldn’t be prouder” of the tribute and his legacy.
President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu are “outright lying,” and “selling a fantasy to Iranian people who are rightfully desperate for regime change,” says Iranian-American Democratic Congresswoman @yassaminansari, who calls the Iran operation an “illegal war.”
“Diplomacy is not reality TV. The world is not a casino. Statecraft is not a real estate deal.” @UNReliefChief @TFletcher tells me that as the war with Iran continues to escalate, “We’ll be paying for this war for years to come… “We’re deeply frustrated… that’s diplomatic spea…
The Philippines is the first country to declare a national state of emergency over the global energy crisis. Philippine Foreign Secretary @SecLazaro says they have 40-45 days of petroleum supply left. It’s “already taking a toll on the ordinary Filipino,” with “cascading effects”
Exclusive: The Pentagon is considering whether to divert weapons intended for Ukraine to the Middle East as the war in Iran depletes some of the U.S. military’s most critical munitions, according to three people familiar with the matter. wapo.st/4dc2l7f

With war in Iran, Russia “get[s] more money to pay for more weapons to attack Ukraine… while there will be less available” for Kyiv, says Norway’s Foreign Minister. Now, though, “the battlefront in Ukraine is quite static. Russia has not gained much lately.”
“If this war continues, it will not only be a long war, but the consequences can last for years,” says Norway’s FM @EspenBarthEide. “We are not going to enter the war… but we do want to be helpful” getting the Strait of Hormuz open & reaching peace. “This particular war is not a…

On Robert Mueller’s death, President Trump wrote “Good, I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!” “Totally inappropriate,” says @marctshort, fmr Trump official. He “was an honorable man who should be given the respect he deserved for his service to our country.…
“The president’s base is with him” on Iran, argues Trump’s fmr WH director of legislative affairs @marctshort. “A lot of influencers have proven they actually don’t have that much influence… Most of MAGA is really supportive of Trump personally, more so than a set of issues.”
“For two real estate developers to be in charge of foreign policy with Ukraine and Gaza and now in theory with resolution in Iran, I think there's a reason that you want people to be Senate confirmed,” says former Trump WH official @marctshort, adding he finds it “concerning.”
