I’ve left Haiti after two weeks reporting first at the border, then from inside the country once we were able to cross. It was a trip which wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for some amazing people inside Haiti working so hard under tough conditions to tell stories.

I had a very fun dinner one night with David Soul and the documentary team he was with in Havana a little over a decade ago. We drank rum and he sang Silver Lady to the table. My video of it is tragically lost but this photo endures.. A gentleman and a total star. RIP Hutch.

Extraordinary to see Chavismo both lose and accept the defeat in Barinas. On one trip in 2009, tenth anniversary of Chavez in power, his control of his home state - his fiefdom - was total. Important and symbolic victory for the opposition.

The conditions where the migrants are spending the night in Escuintla are horrendous. Many are coughing and clearly unwell. No mattresses, food or facilities of any kind, no sign of NGOs or local govt support. Just families fending for themselves.

Eusebio Leal, Havana’s City Historian, was universally respected and loved in Cuba for his work preserving the old city from the ravages of the sea-spray, sun, rain and neglect. “When a building falls in this city, it takes a piece of my heart with it” he told me in 2016. RIP.

Our beloved friend, Jo Tuckman, The Guardian’s fearless reporter in Mexico has died. We will miss her more than I can write on here. Heart just breaking for her wonderful kids. She was quite simply the best of us, as a journalist but most of all as a human being. See ya missus. X

Mexico passes the mark of 20,000 coronavirus-related deaths. While large, round numbers are somewhat arbitrary milestones in this awful pandemic, it does go to underline just how far Mexico is from the confident prediction of “just” 6k deaths Lopez-Gatell made in early May.

Also @LulaOficial said @jairbolsonaro was “ideologically guided by a man who doesn’t believe the world is round but flat” and that he “doesn’t have the slightest notion of int’l geopolitics”. Also said Govt was “deforesting #Amazon like Brazil & world didn’t lack forests”.
