A glorious morning in Mexico City as the polls open in this historic election: the country’s first female president expected to be elected. But also Mexico’s most violent campaign in living memory. Follow our coverage all day on @BBCWorld and @bbcworldservice
As I return from a generous and truly lovely period of paternity leave (all props to the BBC for that), here I’ve written about another father: Luis Diaz’s dad, his kidnapping and the peace process in Colombia. And my other great love, Liverpool FC:

This week was the 61st anniversary of the US embargo on Cuba. Some thoughts both on its undeniable impact and the Cuban Govt’s use of the decades-long sanction as an ideal excuse behind which to mask its own failings: www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-645...
Found in the wild @bridgestbooks in Washington DC. Really pleased and excited to see Populista doing well and being promoted on US shelves! Especially given that the topic feels more relevant than ever…
My report from Sonora with the extraordinarily brave mothers and relatives of Mexico’s disappeared was the opening piece on today’s From Our Own Correspondent: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0013qsc
As part of our BBC special in Mexico City, here is the story of incredible Mexican chef and deportee, Eduardo Garcia of @MaximoBistrot and others - produced by @juliagaliano, shot by Ron Skeens and edited by @AngelicaMCasas

Another v exciting moment as ¡Populista! is published today in paperback. If you haven’t got your copy yet, now you have no excuse! @HoZ_Books have again done a wonderful job on the cover and presentation. Thanks to @clare_esme @that_matt_bray & @CulturalKate Abrazos, and enj…
Just listened back to my interview w/ @OsirisLunaMeza after first @_elfaro_ @chelefaro report of talks with pandillas last year:
OLM: “Te lo asevero, que pongo mi palabra, no he tenido ninguna reunión
WG: Ud va a renunciar si sale que sí tuvo?
OLM:yo renunciaría el fuero a todo”
Make no mistake: this is the biggest challenge that @DiazCanelB has faced in his political career. Popular anger, so rarely expressed collectively or on the streets in Cuba, worries the authorities there more than perhaps anything.
Lockdown and quarantine and COVID have meant this geeky/rock-and-roll moment for authors has been denied me until now. But here it is, Populista in the wild, in @Waterstones in Canterbury. 🙌
A piece I wrote for the fine folk at @_ElFaro_

Ortega first public appearance since May was typically bombastic and defiant. Yet it had the opposite effect — making him look weak and like the “emperor with no clothes”. www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-575...
As the results come in from the election in Ecuador and appear a major setback for Rafael Correa, my book (for which Correa gave me an exclusive interview) has just received a terrific review in @el_pais by the excellent @fmanetto - elpais.com/internacional/2021-04-12/lidere...
Cuba’s biggest hope for a coronavirus vaccine is one developed on the island by Cuban scientists. Final trials of ‘Soberana 2’ begin on 1st March and the signs so far are very promising: www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-56069577
¡Populista! in the wild! Seen at @BookBarUK in N4. In fine company alongside @BBCJonSopel - Muchas gracias for the prominent display (and to @smithamundasad for pinging over the pic.)
Hugely flattered by this terrific review of ¡Populista! in The Guardian by the brilliant @carrieegibson (whose books on the Caribbean and Hispanic North America are required reading.) Thank you! www.theguardian.com/books/2021/jan/09/popu...
The culmination of a lot of work. And amazing support from @clare_esme and @HoZ_Books and of course, @juliagaliano without whom... Truly thankful and very excited to have my hands on a copy (or two!)
Just been talking on @BBCOS about these disturbing photos, given out by the Salvadoran presidency, over its clampdown on maras / gang members in prison. Leaders won’t see “ni un rayo de sol” said the prisons head. Human rights implications are shocking & for poss spread of cov…
We spoke exclusively to @JeanineAnez in La Paz who denied she has taken power via a coup and said @evoespueblo may face charges if he returns to Bolivia. Coming up on @BBCWorld and on @bbcmundo with @ivanbor @lucianicgomes & @MoisesZeferino
“A failure of everything”. A round up and some thoughts on the most ignominious week in #AMLO’s time in power: www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-501...
Also @LulaOficial said @jairbolsonaro was “ideologically guided by a man who doesn’t believe the world is round but flat” and that he “doesn’t have the slightest notion of int’l geopolitics”. Also said Govt was “deforesting #Amazon like Brazil & world didn’t lack forests”.
