Finland has strong defence capabilities and strong partners and allies. Finland is part of a broader community.   We never want to find ourselves in an armed conflict with Russia or any other country, but we must be prepared for a range of threats. Deterrence is built to ensure that those threats never materialise.   Living with uncertainty is difficult, but necessary. There are more shades of grey in the world today.   Today I addressed the Atlantic Council of Finland in Helsinki. Jaakko Iloniemi, Honorary Chair of the Council, is one of Finland’s most influential foreign policy thinkers. Two things stand out in his approach: a realistic assessment of the situation and active engagement. This is a sound guiding principle for Finland as well.
