I am saddened to learn of the passing of Siim Kallas. He was a dedicated European statesman. Over the years, I had the privilege of meeting him on numerous occasions, and I will remember him for many things. From inviting me on a bike ride through the beautiful Estonian countryside to working alongside him on strengthening Europe's response to Russian aggression and advancing of EU enlargement, he always kept the bigger picture in mind. Throughout his life, he made an extraordinary contribution not only to Estonia, but to all those who value democracy, freedom, and a rules-based international order. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
