Two hundred and fifty years ago, a republic was born on the proposition that liberty could outlast empire. The United States became the leader of the free world. It has deeply inspired my life in politics. But the question now is not what America has been. It is whether America still has the will to lead. I do hope that the American people will continue their great inheritance—not merely as a nation of strength, but as a republic of principle.
