During his visit to Türkiye today, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a new strategic relationship between the two nations. Per the prime minister and subsequent reports, the strategic partnership will be centered on four pillars, economic trade and investment cooperation, defense cooperation, energy deals, and cultural ties (or people to people ties). The announcement comes as Canada, amidst ongoing strategic rows with the U.S., has increasingly sought to increase cooperation along a wide range of fronts with nations in efforts to diversify the implementation of it’s strategic objectives and wider outlook. Some key areas of cooperation that should be noted are, planned viability discussions on joint projects to expand Türkiye’s nuclear power capacity, defense industry cooperation (an area Canada had previously restricted due to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s increasing authoritarian tendencies), and investments in key industries, including critical minerals, within Türkiye.
