To frame Israel as acting autonomously, apart from or contrary to US interests (or even pupettering the US), is to ignore the material logic of empire. Israel is not an unruly client but a vassal state whose power is derivative, functioning as an advanced garrison of US imperialism in the region. Israel's occupation of historic Palestine, and attacks on Lebanon, Yemen, Syria and Iran are not aberrations tolerated in spite of the US, but essential instruments of American hegemony: securing regional dominance, disciplining Arab states, and safeguarding the circuits of capital. US support for Israel is, therefore, not a moral lapse or strategic anomaly but is the rational expression of imperial interests, with Israel serving as the sharpened edge of the empire’s sword
