Em uma entrevista à CNN sobre a atual situação da Venezuela, fui questionada se acredito que o governo interino seguirá o mesmo regime do anterior.
Minha resposta foi direta: sim, trata-se do mesmo regime. E é importante deixar claro que não faço nenhuma defesa do governo Maduro, uma ditadura que eu não desejo para nenhum povo.
Mas a questão central para a comunidade internacional não é apenas o caráter desse governo.
A pergunta fundamental é outra: algum Estado tem o direito de usar força e coerção para determinar o futuro de um país soberano?
A Venezuela é um Estado soberano. E espero que a comunidade internacional seja mais incisiva na defesa desse princípio básico do direito internacional.
Vivemos um momento em que a democracia se mostra cada vez mais frágil, não apenas na América Latina, mas em diferentes partes do mundo. Quando a soberania dos povos é relativizada, a democracia como um todo entra em risco.

In an interview with CNN about the current situation in Venezuela, I was asked whether I believe the interim government will follow the same regime as the previous one.
My answer was clear: yes, it is the same regime. And it is important to say that I do not defend the Maduro government, a dictatorship I would not wish on any people.
But the central issue for the international community is not only the nature of that government.
The fundamental question is this: does any State have the right to use force and coercion to determine the future of a sovereign country?
Venezuela is a sovereign State, and I hope the international community will be more assertive in defending this basic principle of international law.
We are living in a moment in which democracy is increasingly fragile, not only in Latin America but across the world. When the sovereignty of peoples is undermined, democracy itself is at risk.
