There are lives that shape a nation, and there are lives whose meaning transcends the boundaries of nation, time and place.
Today, I signed the Book of Condolence in honour of The Right Excellent Sir Garfield St Aubrun Sobers, NH, OCC. I did so with a profound sense of gratitude for this remarkable son of Barbados, whose incomparable talent, quiet humility and strength of character inspired generations at home, across our Caribbean civilisation and throughout the world.
Nearly sixty years ago, C.L.R. James understood what history has long since confirmed. In placing Sir Garry among the giants of civilisation, he wrote simply: “I refer, of course, to Garfield Sobers.” Those words still capture the measure of the man.
Sir Garry’s life remains an enduring reminder that greatness is never determined by the size of the place from which we come, but by the reach of our contribution to humanity. Barbados will forever be proud that he was born of this soil, shaped by this nation and shared with the world.
