I’m a firm supporter of public broadcasting and so I have welcomed the adverts the BBC has produced to show the range of quality television it produces on the basis of its funding via the license fee. I have to say though that the best way of securing an increase in the license fee would be to send Natalie Haynes out on tour. Her “Stand Up for the Classic” series is uniquely fascinating, informative, witty and seriously funny. This programne is one from an earlier series and I’ve chosen it because I am an admirer of Cicero. When I was Shadow Chancellor I gave each one of my ministerial team a copy of the writings of Cicero on how to win an argument. We might not have won every argument as a result but it at least made the speeches more entertaining. www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/b0785rmr
