I have convened a regular meeting of what are described as unpaid carers for a few years now. These are family members who care for their disabled children, siblings or parents, or, in some instances, both. They are the largely hidden & unrecognised foundations of our existing precarious care service. They care out of love & duty, but the pressure they are under is often unrelenting and thrusts many into severe hardship and poverty. This article speaks for so many of them about the fears they have for the future. So yes, in this incredibly welcome discussion about social care it’s important they are not just heard but are part of the design & creation of the new system of social care in our country. www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/oct...
