The current war makes us reflect not only on the conflicts stirred up by strongmen and zealots, but also on the global energy map. Who owns what? Who buys from whom? Who controls the trade routes?
Today, just six out of nearly 200 countries control the majority of the world’s oil and gas reserves. To reach a sustainable energy economy, leaders should build sustainable cooperation and peace treaties, while at the same time investing in solar energy and other energy sources that are far more evenly distributed. This could help reduce the acute dependencies that often fuel tensions, annexations, and wars.
