Brazil votes on Sunday. A newly manufactured criminal investigation involving presidential candidate @FlavioBolsonaro is now in the hands of Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
@CNNBrasil reports widespread fears that Moraes could act before the vote or keep the case as an “instrument of political negotiation” if Flávio wins and efforts to impeach Moraes advance. The manufacturing of instruments of political negotiation is standard operating procedure for Moraes. Brazilians know it and the world knows it. Certainly all senior American officials will see right through this final act of desperation.
An investigation must establish facts but it must never become a judicial leash on an elected president.
If elected, Flávio must govern without fear or favor, faithfully serving the voters who put him there. He owes them honest government, obedience to the Brazilian Constitution and the courage to uphold it, even when that means confronting judicial abuse.
He need not fear Moraes. No STF justice will own a president’s mandate.
Brazilians and democratic voices around the world must stand firmly behind his right to govern lawfully. The ballot cannot become a permission slip that a judge can revoke for political disobedience.
