Tonight, I have joined an exclusive club of Americans targeted for standing up to Alexandre de Moraes. The attempt by Moraes’s own Federal Police unit to portray routine professional correspondence as evidence of “foreign subordination” is the latest desperate maneuver to keep him afloat. As an American lawyer, I routinely provide legal and communications guidance. That is my job. Offering feedback on a short public note or transmitting a public court filing is entirely ordinary. Yet these routine actions are now twisted into conspiracy theories. By that logic, any political leader who consults a lawyer, speechwriter, or strategist must be plotting to overthrow democracy. The message is unmistakable. Anyone who dares to criticize or expose Moraes’s relentless censorship campaign will be targeted — whether you are a lawyer, an American citizen, or speaking freely from U.S. soil. Or all three at once. Freedom of expression is not granted by governments; it is inherent to every person. As Benjamin Franklin warned, “Whoever would overthrow the liberty of a nation must begin by subduing the freeness of speech.” I will continue my work transparently and professionally, without fear. Real accountability for Moraes will not come through police reports, but in U.S. court where we are still waiting for him.
