37 years ago, in his final speech as President, Ronald Reagan said something profound about what it means to be an American. America is not a bloodline. It is not a tribe. It is not reserved for those whose families came first. America is an idea and a promise. Anyone, from any corner of the earth, can come here and become fully, proudly American. And, as the Supreme Court unequivocally decided, anyone born here is American by birth. As we approach July 4th and the 250th anniversary of the United States, Reagan’s words feel especially powerful. America’s greatness has always come from its ability to renew itself through freedom, opportunity, hard work, faith, as well as the courage of those who believe in this land of opportunity and that tomorrow can be better than yesterday. Reagan said it best. “You can go to live in France, but you cannot become a Frenchman. You can go to live in Germany or Turkey or Japan, but you cannot become a German, a Turk, or a Japanese.
