Thursday: “Never.” Friday: “Maybe.” The Moraes Impeachment Saga. Enough games.
On Thursday @davialcolumbre - who presides the Brazilian Senate - outrageously said “Even with all 81 senators’ signatures, I won’t put Alexandre de Moraes’s impeachment on the agenda.”
Last night: “We may review seriously and responsibly.”
Turns out 24 hours, a few headlines, and some international pressure can work miracles.
Enough lawfare. Brazil’s Senate now has a majority calling for Moraes’s removal. Every day of delay signals that one man is untouchable and does meld irreparable harm to Brazilian institutions.
It’s time to stop playing hide-and-seek with democracy. Put impeachment on the agenda, reckon with what Moraes has been doing for years, debate it in the open, and let the votes decide.
The Brazilian people are watching. So is the rest of the world and they got popcorn.
