The @WSJ reports that Brazil’s Alexandre de Moraes used a fake U.S. Customs and Border Protection record to justify the imprisonment of a political opponent, @jairbolsonaro aide Filipe Martins, in order to pressure him to cooperate against Bolsonaro.
CBP has finally been able to confirm the record was false, yet for over a year Moraes relied on it to keep Martins jailed, much of it in solitary confinement, and a total of 183 days detained without charges, based on a forged entry in a U.S. federal database.
It raises a terrifying question. How did a foreign regime plant or exploit falsified data inside a CBP database to advance a political prosecution abroad?
