Democracy means listening. Not silencing.
The Brazilian Congress, the voice of Brazilians, has the votes to impeach Alexandre de Moraes and to pass an amnesty for @jairbolsonaro. That is how a republic is meant to work.
But Moraes, when convicting Bolsonaro, said that even if Congress passes an amnesty, the Supreme Court will strike it down as “unconstitutional.” Meanwhile Senate President @davialcolumbre (polling at 2%) continues to block the impeachment of Moraes.
Let’s be clear.
• Voters choose representatives
• Representatives make laws
• An unelected judge decides those laws don’t count
• The representatives have the votes to bring impeachment charges against the judge.
• The most unpopular representative in Congress blocks the will of the representatives to remove the judge.
@JDVance said it best in Munich: “If you’re running in fear of your own voters, there is nothing America can do for you.”
A country where Congress is overruled is not “defending democracy.” It is dismantling it.
The United States and the world should stand with the Brazilian people at this critical time.
