Five years after the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, activist Masuda Sultan says it's important "not to repeat the 1990s of turning our backs" on the population under Taliban rule. "We need to engage with the Afghan people, support Afghan women and support civil society."
She says many Taliban officials want to loosen the draconian restrictions on women and girls, but that the emir — the country's supreme leader — has overruled such changes.
