Reports of fighting escalating near Bab Al-Mandab overnight. I was there last week and warned further disruption would raise food prices, deepen hardship, and add more obstacles for aid. Yemen's people suffer most and the impact is global. The world must step up with solutions.
In El-Obeid I saw fear, loss & desperation. Once a thriving city, now home to displacement camps lacking shelter, food & water, and risk of more fighting. Sudan's war is spreading, millions risk losing access to aid. Urgent action and resources needed. My interview with…
In Yemen this week. Fighting has escalated again, deepening a hunger crisis already among the world's worst. Half the population faces acute hunger. Families have few options left. @WFP lacks the funding and access to reach everyone.
Yemen - rising needs, escalating conflict and lack of access and funding. I join the Secretary General @antonioguterres in calling for the immediate release of the 73 UN staff, including 38 @WFP colleagues, and the conditions to resume principled humanitarian operations.
In Aden today. A few kilometers from Bab Al-Mandeb Strait - another vital global trade route disrupted by conflict, driving up food prices around the world. Half the population in #Yemen faces hunger. Global food routes must stay open. The world cannot afford another choke point.
A packed 48 hours in Sweden. Meetings with @SweMFA, @Sida, @ICC_Sweden, private sector leaders, and engaging conversations with students. We explored how stronger partnerships across all sectors can help end hunger. Sweden remains a steadfast partner to @WFP in this mission 🇸🇪
The world is facing a triple chokepoint crisis. Consequences of conflicts are transmitted across borders & seas. Waiting for famine to be declared is a total failure of duty. @WFP looks to the Security Council for urgent and concrete action. My remarks at the Security Counci…
In Burhakaba, many families are living at risk of famine. Mothers travel for hours along insecure roads for malnutrition treatment. Hunger nearly doubled in #Somalia this year - drought, conflict and rising costs, as funding hits historic lows. Somalia needs support, urgently.
Humanitarians deliver lifesaving support in every crisis, often at great personal risk. Today, on #WorldHumanitarianDay, I thank @WFP teams for showing up, again and again. We must do more to protect aid workers. Protecting them means protecting every community they serve.
Behind every running #Ebola clinic is a supply chain getting help where it's needed. Here is one of many planes loaded in Entebbe, landing in Bunia. @WFP-led @logcluster has moved over 1,000 mt of cargo for humanitarian partners. This is what an integrated response looks like.
Brilliant meeting with @WFP_Uganda team. Great spirit and teamwork as they carry out a full response for refugees, resilience and anticipatory action. Leaving with a Karimojong and akopiya, ceremonial attire from the Karamoja region, symbols of Ugandan heritage and hospitality.
Attacks on shipping routes, from the Strait of Hormuz to the Black Sea, are disrupting food supply chains and driving up hunger worldwide. People suffer and humanitarian operations are put at risk. I spoke to @CNN about this worrying trend.
75 years ago, the world promised to protect anyone forced to flee. Now, that is being tested. In #Uganda, home to 2 million refugees, funding cuts have forced @WFP to cut assistance to half of them. The same is happening around the world. Now is the time to step up support.
Pleasure meeting H.E. President @KagutaMuseveni. Uganda shows humanitarian leadership, hosting nearly 2 million refugees, supporting the regional Ebola response & preparing for #ElNiño. @WFP is proud to support government efforts to strengthen resilience and act ahead of cri…
Leaving #DRC with one message: Ebola is moving fast, hitting people already facing conflict and hunger. Communities are key to ending it, but need support. @WFP offers logistics for health response, but food & safety are essential. The world must step in, with speed & res…
At this kitchen in #Bunia, women cook daily meals for #Ebola patients and health workers. This is one part of @WFP's response to make sure no one has to choose between staying healthy or going hungry. But much more needs to be done, fast, to scale-up and address broader needs.
Important meeting with 🇨🇩 PM Judith Suminwa Tuluka in Kinshasa to reaffirm our strong partnership in support of people across #DRC. @WFP is working with partners and communities to back government efforts to meet urgent food needs and help contain the #Ebola outbreak.
Briefing the Arab Group in #NY on Sudan, Gaza, Lebanon and more. My message: we need diplomatic solutions to end the conflicts driving hunger, continued support for lifesaving work, and partnerships to invest in preparedness and stronger national systems before crises strike.
At the Humanitarian Dialogue at @UN Headquarters with Member States, I emphasized how effective the humanitarian system can be with the right diplomatic and financial backing. We must keep hunger high on the global agenda. Thank you @SwedenUN for hosting.
Back in #DC. Busy 48 hours, meetings from @StateDept to Capitol. Discussions on Sudan, Haiti, Gaza, and more. Clear alignment across the board on the fight against hunger. As needs rise, continued US support is critical.
We cannot stop #ElNiño, but we can stop it becoming a hunger crisis. In #Guatemala, I met farmers fighting to protect this year's harvest from drought and erratic rains. Early warning, tools and training are supporting, but we need global support to sustain and scale up.
This year's #ElNiño is expected to be the strongest on record. In El Salvador, I met farmers preparing for the impact before it hits. @WFP works with the government to take early action and protect crops and livelihoods. We now need the funding to sustain and scale this work.
48 productive hours in #Brussels, meeting with leaders from the European Parliament, European Commission, Member States and the Arab League to discuss Sudan, Ukraine, humanitarian financing and sustained diplomacy. Brussels remains at the heart of international partnership.
Addressed the @EP_Development. Europe has been an invaluable supporter of WFP. But as crises compound, in Ukraine, Sudan, Gaza and more, we need the #EU to protect humanitarian funding and use its diplomacy and influence to end conflicts and ensure humanitarian access.
Underground in #Kharkiv, where this metro station is also a bomb shelter and a school. As another school year approaches, @WFP will continue supporting daily school meals in frontline regions so children can have the right nutrition to learn and grow.
Attacks on ports in #Odesa threaten to reverse the progress in getting Ukrainian food to millions around the world. It is essential that these ports remain open, for Ukraine and for global food security. We cannot afford further disruptions to global food corridors.
From near #Ukraine's frontline, where insecurity is worsening and food is often few kilometres away but too dangerous for people to reach. I met families living under daily shelling & the @WFP teams & local partners who keep showing up to deliver food and cash despite the…
My @BBCWorld interview from a shelter in Zolochiv, Kharkiv, after drone activity forced us there mid-food distribution. @WFP supports Ukrainian families on the frontline, but civilian and humanitarian casualties are increasing. The human cost of this war can't be an afterthought.
With the right AI governance, AI can help humanitarians reach more people, faster and more safely. @WFP is using it to anticipate crises earlier, optimize aid delivery, and more. Thank you USG Amandeep Gill @gioasempre for efforts to scale that across the UN system responsibly.
El Obeid is a warning, we've seen this before and cannot see it again. Violence and hunger are rising. In the gap between what @WFP can do and what funding allows, people are left behind. The world must act to end this war and support #Sudan. My interview with @AJArabic.
In Hamburg with @BMZ_Bund and @unicefchief to back the Call to Action to end child malnutrition through food fortification - a simple, powerful tool. @WFP brings the expertise to scale it. No child should go to bed hungry. Thanks to Germany for bringing us together. #HSC26
Five days on, families still searching for loved ones. Venezuelan people have shown remarkable strength and solidarity. @WFP started emergency food distributions - but much more needs to be done. Spoke to @CNN about the latest on #Venezuela response.
The first 72 hours are critical. As rescue teams work to find survivors, @WFP teams are pre-positioning food and lending our logistics capacity to support a full response for the people of #Venezuela. I spoke to @BBCWorld on the situation and need for fast action.
This year marks 30 years of the Executive Board guiding @WFP through unprecedented challenges. The open and honest conversations in these rooms push us to reach further and respond faster. Ending hunger is possible when we all work together.
Pope Leo XIV @Pontifex visited @WFP with a powerful reminder that ending hunger is a responsibility we all share. Honored to have welcomed His Holiness. He stood with our team, called for global action to end hunger and the conflicts behind it. On behalf of all @WFP, thank you.
Conflict and shocks are forcing families to decide who eats and who goes hungry. Our latest joint report with @FAO warns of worsening hunger across 13 hotspots in the coming months. We have a narrow window before more people are pushed to starvation. 🔗ow.ly/26G750ZcI8P
Back in Jerusalem with our team. Gaza remains brutal, the West Bank is deteriorating. Our teams reach over a million Palestinians every month with food, but progress is fragile without sustained access, shelter and medicine. There is no recovery without an end to this conflict.
10 years of strong partnership. @WFP and @KSRelief have worked together since day one to fight hunger and build local, sustainable solutions. I met with H.E. Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah today to discuss the future: innovation, technology & scaling impact.
