How can the same digital product be safer for a child in one country than in another? Our recent consultations in Latin America and the Caribbean surfaced a troubling issue: discrimination by design. Global technology companies don’t always roll out the same safety features everywhere. So a child’s protection can depend on where they live and the strength of local laws... even as children face harmful content, addictive design and other risks at enormous scale. On 6 October, our regional consultations turn to Africa to examine how these risks and protections play out there. Further regional consultations will build the global picture. The evidence will inform our report to the Human Rights Council in 2027. Our position is clear: All children have the same rights and deserve the same protection, wherever they live. Companies need to address risks in their products and business models. States need regulation that keeps pace with technology.
