I usually ignore abusive attacks or severe criticisms of the New Left Review on social networks or elsewhere, but the interview with Ariella Angel of Jewish Currents has angered some of my friends and others I respect. The implication in one of the questions to Arielle (whose answers themselves were splendid) that the NLR has been debating the issue of genocide came as a surprise to me. As far as I and other members of the Editorial Committee are concerned, there has been no such debate. If there has been an ongoing debate it must have been confined to full-time staff. The EC has not been involved at any level. In my opinion devoting one-third of the interview to re-raising an issue that has no meaning any longer was a misjudgment. The 34-page interview I did with Rashid Khalidi, The Neck and the Sword, in the previous issue – the cover of which was painted in Palestinian colours – should be a strong enough statement as to where I stand. As to where the rest of the EC members stand, we shall only find out when a real discussion takes place.
