Hopefully half that.” Before Mars, Elon Musk’s SpaceX is now betting on the Moon as a new hub of computing and space infrastructure. SpaceX president and chief operating officer Gwynne Shotwell told TIME the company hopes to manufacture AI-powered satellites on the lunar surface, part of a broader plan to build data centers in space and partnership with NASA’s lunar Artemis program. In 2021, NASA selected SpaceX to build Artemis’ so-called human landing system: the vehicle designed to land two astronauts on the Moon while two others remain in orbit aboard the Orion spacecraft.
