It took 38 years after the first commercial power plant for Washington to create an agency to regulate electricity. It took 12 years after the first commercial airline flight for Washington to create an aviation agency. After the 1929 crash, it took 5 years to create the SEC. Nuclear was different. Congress created the Atomic Energy Commission in 1946, a decade before the first commercial nuclear plant opened. I view AI safety as urgent as nuclear safety. A federal agency should have existed before AI went commercial. We should not adjourn in September until Speaker Johnson gives us a vote on a bill to create an AI safety agency.
