Ratko Mladić was convicted of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. Yet in Belgrade, he was given a hero’s funeral, with military honours and Serbian government ministers in attendance. For the victims of Srebrenica and the countless others who suffered during the wars in the former Yugoslavia, this is a profound insult. There can be no European future built on glorifying war criminals, rewriting history or denying the suffering of victims. Serbia must choose reconciliation, democracy and European values.
