The Senate unanimously agreed early Friday to restore funding for most of the Department of Homeland Security, a move that could help end a partial shutdown that has disrupted travel nationwide as the Transportation Security Administration has struggled to keep adequate staffing while its workers go without pay.
The measure funds all of DHS, including TSA, but it excludes Immigration and Customs Enforcement and part of border patrol.
TSA workers have gone without pay throughout the 42-day shutdown, leading to staffing shortages. Several major airports have faced flight delays and hourslong security lines have gone viral. On Thursday, President Donald Trump threatened to sign an executive order to "immediately pay" TSA workers, though he offered no details about how that kind of move would be funded.
The legislation now heads to the House for approval, with a vote possible Friday or Saturday.
