Former FCC commissioner Anna Gomez said Tuesday that Disney's lawsuit against the Federal Communications Commission "should be encouraging to all other broadcasters not to cave" to the Trump administration. ABC, which is owned by The Walt Disney Company, claims that the government agency is using its regulatory powers to punish and investigate the television network and violate its right to free speech. “Again and again, the Administration has attacked ABC’s speech — the stories its journalists report and the viewpoints its network programs air,” ABC said in its lawsuit filed Tuesday in federal court. “Over time, those attacks have escalated into express demands that ABC be stripped of its broadcast licenses because of its speech.” Earlier this year, in a rare move, the FCC called for early renewal of ABC's broadcast licenses for the network's owned television stations. The agency cited possible violations of its "prohibition on unlawful discrimination." The unprecedented lawsuit is the latest dispute between the Trump administration, ABC and its owner. "I think what we've learned watching this administration over the last year and a half is that you cannot buy peace from this administration. You only buy time. This administration demands that it be covered in the way that it wants to be covered. It demands that there would be no critics, and it will simply keep coming back. That is what we have seen," Gomez, who was appointed to the FCC by President Joe Biden in 2023 and is the sole Democrat on the commission, told Amna Nawaz (@RealAmnaNawaz). "So I am very glad that Disney has found its courage."
