Israel is a nation at war, besieging both Iran and Lebanon. It is also absorbing constant Iranian attacks after emerging from nearly two and a half years of war following the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks. In a special edition of Compass Points from Israel, host Nick Schifrin sits down with The New York Times’ Ronen Bergman to understand Israel's role in the Iran war. “The Israelis realize that this is going nowhere. They don't understand why this is happening, and they thought that this is going to end with the regime change,” Bergman said. Bergman added that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hasn’t been able to deliver closure regarding Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon — and that will have an effect on future elections. “It's clear that even when you have the best intelligence, the best air force, the best combination of the two, even when you are able to send the pagers or kill the supreme leader ... the chief villain, it's still not enough and it will never be enough unless you will have a closing diplomatic negotiating deal or leg to this,” Bergman added. Compass Points from PBS News analyzes prominent international affairs topics and America’s role in a shifting world, breaking down global conflicts, rising tensions, and their implications for U.S. interests.
