President Donald Trump said the United States will send Iran "back to the Stone Ages" during a prime-time address from the White House on Wednesday.
"We are going to hit them extremely hard over the next two to three weeks," he said. "We are going to bring them back to the Stone Ages, where they belong."
During the address, Trump said he’s following through on a campaign promise to keep Iran from accessing nuclear weapons. He also said the mission was "nearing completion" and that discussions with Iran are ongoing.
“Our objectives are very simple and clear: We are systematically dismantling the regime's ability to threaten America or project power outside of their borders,” he said. “That means eliminating Iran's navy, which is now absolutely destroyed, hurting the air force and their missile program at levels never seen before and annihilating their defense industrial base.”
Polls show that majorities of Americans oppose military action in Iran, and also oppose U.S. troops on the ground there.
The speech marks the first time Trump has addressed the nation in prime time since the U.S. and Israel launched the war against Iran more than a month ago.
