On his first day back in office last year, President Donald Trump signed an executive order seeking to end birthright citizenship, a cornerstone of immigration policy enshrined in the 14th Amendment to the Constitution and affirmed by the Supreme Court more than 100 years ago.
The principle is simple. If you are born here, you are a citizen. But now the justices are reexamining the core questions — what makes an American citizen, and who gets to make the rules?
