So NYT reports that Third Way is spending $15-million to discredit democratic socialism ahead of the presidential elections. “Their fear: Dr. El-Sayed was paving a path for a progressive to seize the party’s presidential nomination in 2028 — and then go on to lose the general election.” Except that is not their real fear. Their real fear is that the left will go on to *win* the general election, and, like Mamdani in NYC, prove that the left can govern. They are willing to throw the general election to Republicans by smearing the left and dividing and demoralizing the Dem base to avoid that outcome. How do we know they are willing gamble in this way? Because that's how Trump won the first time.
