The Canada–Ecuador FTA brazenly violates Ecuador’s Constitution and disregards the outcome of Ecuador’s 2025 referendum which rejects investor-state arbitration. In signing this agreement, Canada contributes to the erosion of democracy and rule of law in Ecuador (and cozies up to its authoritarian ruler)—all while claiming it is a champion of democracy and human rights. A must-read by @ladan22 www.policyalternatives.ca/news-research/di... “Canada-Ecuador FTA “contains an investor-state arbitration process that grants foreign investors the right to bypass Ecuadorian courts and sue the State before international tribunals—a mechanism Ecuador’s Constitution explicitly prohibits.  (…) [The agreement] overrides a ban that Ecuadorians have since reaffirmed twice at the ballot box. Successive governments—from Lenín Moreno to Guillermo Lasso and now Daniel Noboa—have attempted to reintroduce international arbitration into Ecuadorian law. Voters have refused them each time. In April 2024, 65 per cent voted against removing the constitutional ban”
