I had a lengthy conversation with the presidents of Lebanon and Syria.
I am pleased that France is contributing to and participating in these discussions as equal partners, in a new spirit of partnership that Lebanon and Syria now wish to build.
This is truly a historic opportunity for these two countries, which have suffered so greatly from Assad’s dictatorship, regional crises, and terrorism.
President Joseph Aoun, with the support of Nawaf Salam’s government and the Lebanese armed forces, is facing with courage and dignity the threats to Lebanon, its security, and its unity. Hezbollah made a major mistake in dragging Lebanon into a confrontation with Israel. It must immediately cease its attacks. For its part, Israel must clearly renounce any ground offensive in Lebanon.
President Ahmad Al-Charaa supports the efforts of the Lebanese authorities to restore full state control over their territory. His support for Lebanese sovereignty marks a clear break with the past. This lays the groundwork for sound and constructive relations between Lebanon and Syria.
The coordination initiated by the Lebanese and Syrian leadership is essential. I will continue to resolutely support it.
We agreed to remain in close contact.
