I thank Central African Republic President @FA_Touadera for bringing regional neigbours, @WHO and other partners together to bolster cross-border coordination to prevent the spread of the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. During the High-level Cross-Border Consultative Meeting on Bundibugyo Virus Disease Risk, I emphasized that infectious diseases do not respect borders and that there is an urgent need for stronger international cooperation, real-time data sharing, coordinated surveillance and sustained cross-border collaboration to control the outbreak. I also urged countries in the region to work together to bring about a ceasefire and urgently needed peace in the outbreak’s epicentre in eastern DRC, where decades of hostilities have devastated livelihoods, and impacted health in many ways, including through hunger and reduced access to services. Peace is the best medicine.
