Child mortality has fallen dramatically, from more than 10 million deaths in 2000 to 4.9 million in 2024, according to new estimates released today by @WHO, @UNICEF, @UN Population Division and @WorldBankGroup. However, despite the progress made, around 6,300 newborns still die every single day. The leading causes are complications from prematurity, labour and delivery, along with preventable diseases such as malaria, pneumonia and diarrhoea. Conflict, humanitarian crises and funding gaps are further undermining essential health services in many countries. Yet the solutions are well known. WHO urges governments, donors and partners to strengthen primary health care, expand immunization, improve maternal and newborn care, and ensure every child has access to good nutrition and lifesaving treatment. With renewed commitment, we can accelerate progress once again. t.co/v3vP7iHCWb
