Around the world, one person in every 127 people is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, a diverse group of conditions related to development of the brain. On World #Autism Awareness Day, yesterday, @WHO reaffirms the dignity, value and potential of every autistic person. Yet for too many autistic people, stigma and discrimination still stand in the way of timely, high-quality services, and the support they deserve, all of which limit opportunities to participate in society. Equal opportunities for all people living with autism to thrive should be ensured from early in life. We know that early identification of autism, inclusive education, and nurturing care within families and communities can transform lives. WHO advocates for every autistic person to be given the support and services to shape their own future, and enjoy equal access to health care, education and meaningful work.
