한미동맹은 매우 특별합니다. 대한민국의 발전은 과거 미국의 지지와 지원을 빼놓고는 설명하기 어려우며, 이제 대한민국은 한층 성장한 국력을 바탕으로 미국의 제조업 부흥과 글로벌 리더십 강화에 적극 기여하고 있습니다.
한국을 방문해 주신 진 섀힌 상원 외교위원회 간사님과 존 커티스 상원의원을 비롯한 의원 여러분을 만나, 한미동맹에 대한 초당적 지지가 굳건히 유지되고 있음을 다시 한번 확인했습니다.
양국은 지난해 두 차례 정상회담을 통해 미래지향적 협력을 더욱 발전시킬 동력을 마련했습니다. 이를 토대로 대미 전략투자를 차질 없이 이행하는 동시에 원자력의 평화적 이용, 핵추진잠수함, 조선 등 주요 분야에서의 협력을 가속화하기 위해 노력하고 있습니다.
오늘 우리는 중동 지역 분쟁의 여파가 민생과 산업에 미치는 영향을 최소화하기 위해 한미 간 소통이 중요하다는 데 인식을 같이했습니다. 아울러 한국의 대미 투자가 원활히 추진될 수 있도록 이를 뒷받침할 비자 제도 개선 방안에 대한 미 의회의 협조도 요청했습니다.
미 의회의 지속적인 관심과 지원 속에 한미동맹이 더욱 발전해 나가길 기대합니다. 앞으로도 양국은 서로를 뒷받침하며, 든든한 파트너로서 함께 할 것입니다.
The ROK-U.S. Alliance is truly special. The support of the United States has been indispensable to Korea's development. Now, based on its remarkable growth, Korea is actively contributing to America's manufacturing renaissance and strengthening its global leadership.
Today's meeting with Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Sen. John Curtis, and their delegation provided a good opportunity to reaffirm that the bipartisan support for our alliance in the U.S. Congress remains strong.
Building on the two bilateral summits last year, we are actively working together to further advance future-oriented cooperation, including Korea's strategic investment in the United States, peaceful use of nuclear energy, conventionally armed nuclear-powered submarines, and shipbuilding.
We shared the view that close communication between our two countries is essential to minimizing the impact of the crisis in the Middle East on people's livelihoods and industries. I also asked for cooperation from the U.S. Congress to improve the U.S. visa system so as to facilitate Korean investment in the United States.
I look forward to seeing the ROK-U.S. Alliance grow ever stronger with the continued interest and support of the U.S. Congress. Our two nations will continue to stand by each other as steadfast partners.
