캐나다는 우리와 동맹에 준하는 핵심 우방국입니다. 6·25 전쟁 당시 수교 이전임에도 미국과 영국에 이어 세 번째로 많은 2만 7천여 명을 파병했으며, 현재도 한반도 정책을 지지하고 태평양 지역에서 공동 훈련을 실시하는 등 역내 안보 협력에 적극 참여하고 있습니다.
한-캐나다 관계는 안보, 경제, 인적 교류를 아우르는 포괄적 전략 동반자로서 꾸준히 발전해 왔습니다. 양국 간 교역 규모는 FTA 발효 이후 크게 늘었고, 캐나다 내 재외동포 사회 역시 양국을 잇는 든든한 가교 역할을 하고 있습니다.
오늘 마크 카니 캐나다 총리님과 통화를 나누며 안보, 경제, 에너지, 문화 등 여러 분야에서 협력을 한층 더 강화해 나가자는 데 의견을 같이했습니다. 또한 중동 정세의 평화적 해결과 호르무즈 해협 항행의 자유 보장을 위한 국제사회의 노력에도 함께 힘을 모으기로 했습니다.
북태평양을 공유하는 대한민국과 캐나다가 인도-태평양 지역에서 신뢰받는 파트너로서 더욱 확고히 자리 잡아 가길 바랍니다. 앞으로 더욱 단단해질 우리의 협력과 우정을 기대합니다.
Canada is a key partner to Korea, comparable to an ally. Even before our two countries established diplomatic relations, Canada sent as many as 27,000 troops to support us during the Korean War. This marked the third-largest contribution, following the United States and the United Kingdom. To this day, Canada continues to support our policy toward North Korea and engages actively in regional security cooperation, including through joint exercises in the Pacific.
Our bilateral relations have steadily evolved within the framework of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership encompassing security, economic cooperation, and people-to-people exchanges. Our bilateral trade has expanded significantly since the Korea-Canada Free Trade Agreement (FTA) took effect. The Korean community in Canada continues to serve as a robust bridge connecting our two countries.
In today's phone call with Prime Minister @MarkJCarney, we shared the view that our two countries should further strengthen cooperation across a wide range of areas, including security, economic cooperation, energy, and culture. We also reaffirmed our commitment to join forces in the international community's efforts toward resolving the situation in the Middle East peacefully and ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
As countries sharing the North Pacific region, I hope to see Korea and Canada further strengthening our standing as reliable partners in the Indo-Pacific region. I look forward to ever-deepening cooperation and friendship between our two countries in the years ahead.
