Bloomberg reports that U.S. Central Command has requested deployment of the Army’s Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW), known as Dark Eagle, to the Middle East for possible use against Iran.
Dark Eagle would provide longer-range strike options as Iran has moved ballistic missile launchers beyond the reach of systems like the Precision Strike Missile.
If approved, it would mark the first operational deployment of America’s hypersonic missile, which remains in limited production and has not yet been declared fully combat-ready.
Dark Eagle is a ground-launched boost-glide system capable of traveling somewhere between 2800-3500 km at speeds exceeding Mach 5, with flight times under 20 minutes to maximum range.
Its maneuverable Common Hypersonic Glide Body allows it to evade traditional air defenses through erratic high-altitude flight, delivering high precision against defended targets.
The conventional warhead, though relatively small at around 30 pounds, relies heavily on kinetic energy for destructive effect.
Against Iran, Dark Eagle would be suited for time-sensitive, high-value targets such as command nodes, air defense radars and ballistic missile launchers.
Its speed and range enable rapid strikes on assets that are currently protected by distance and mobility, offering U.S. forces a capability to disrupt Iran’s missile threat with minimal warning.
It would also make it possible to test Dark Eagle in battle ahead of potential future conflicts with peer or near-peer adversaries in which the battle space would be highly contested.
