In the Dagestani village of Gubden, 11 locals were arrested on suspicion of establishing a radical religious enclave.
They had set up a checkpoint at the entrance to the village, deciding who could enter and who was barred. At night, they completely blocked the road and installed a surveillance system around the perimeter.
During the day, patrols enforced a strict “correct way of life.” Those who violated the rules were beaten.
Eventually, special forces units arrived and carried out a raid. Nine suspects have been sent to pre-trial detention, while the court will decide the fate of the remaining two.
