🇬🇷🇱🇾 550,000 migrants in Libya are waiting to cross into Europe
Greek Migration Minister Thanos Plevris has reported a sharp surge in migrant arrivals on Greece’s southern islands.
Greece has temporarily suspended the right to apply for asylum for individuals arriving by sea from North Africa.
Plevris stated that those who do not qualify for asylum will be detained and returned.
The figures align with UNHCR data, which shows that more than 559,000 Sudanese refugees have entered Libya since April 2023, many of them now moving toward coastal areas for the crossing.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) warns that 2026 has already become one of the deadliest years on record in the Mediterranean, with nearly 1,000 deaths reported as of April.
