A new law introducing mandatory deportations for foreigners convicted of serious crimes was supposed to come into force in Denmark on May 1st, but has been postponed by the snap election that took place in late March. Every migrant person sentenced to more than year in prison for serious crimes will be deported under the proposed law. The law is expected to be passed by the new parliament in the coming months. The reform overrides European Convention on Human Rights interpretations which judges previously used to block deportations for criminals who were considered to either have “significant ties to Denmark” or if their human rights couldn’t be guaranteed in their home country.” It’s likely that the new law will be challenged in EU courts and potentially torpedoed by European judges
