Israel released and deported two activists from the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla following extended detention, according to the Israeli Foreign Ministry.
Brazilian activist Thiago de Avila and Spanish activist of Palestinian origin Saif Abukeshek were detained after Israeli forces intercepted the flotilla near the Greek island of Crete on April 30, around 600 nautical miles from Gaza.
The activists’ detentions were extended twice by Israeli courts before authorities said they were released after their investigation was completed.
The Global Sumud Flotilla, carrying humanitarian aid, was attempting to break Israel’s years-long blockade of Gaza. Its first ships departed Barcelona on April 12, while the main fleet sailed from Sicily on April 26
