“Thank you Maria, congratulations for supporting US hegemony”
Anti-war activists disrupted a speech by 2025 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado in Washington, DC, criticising her unconditional support for Israel and US intervention in Venezuela.
Members of Code Pink symbolically presented a “Monroe Doctrine Award” to Machado, referencing a US foreign policy principle that treats the Western Hemisphere as within the US “sphere of influence” and has been used to justify intervention in South America.
“A politician who supported sanctions that devastated Venezuelan families, backed invasion threats, and supports Israel’s genocide in Gaza does not represent peace. She represents war, colonization, and US hegemony,” Code Pink said in a statement online
