Spirit Airlines announced on May 2 that it has cancelled all flights and begun an orderly wind-down of operations, citing rising fuel costs and financial pressures, as the carrier moves to shut down.
The airline, which had been seeking to exit its second bankruptcy in a year, said a potential US government bailout did not materialise. Its parent company confirmed that all flights were cancelled effective immediately and advised passengers not to go to the airport.
US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said efforts to keep the airline operating were explored but ultimately depended on creditor approval. Spirit, founded over 30 years ago as a low-cost carrier, said refunds would be processed, while customer service operations have ceased
