A UN peacekeeper from Indonesia who was critically wounded in southern Lebanon last month has died in a Beirut hospital, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said on Friday.
Dujarric told reporters the secretary-general extended his condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Corporal Rico Pramudia, 31, as well as to the government and people of Indonesia.
Pramudia was wounded on March 29 when a projectile hit his position in Adchit Al Qusayr in southern Lebanon, he said.
Another Indonesian peacekeeper, Cadet Farizal Rhomadhon, was killed in the same incident.
Preliminary findings from an investigation indicated that a shell fired from an Israeli Merkava tank struck a position of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Dujarric said.
He said UNIFIL had repeatedly provided the Israeli military with the coordinates of all UN positions and facilities in an effort to reduce risks to personnel.
With Pramudia’s death, six peacekeepers serving with UNIFIL have been killed and several others seriously injured during recent hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, Dujarric said.
He said attacks on UN peacekeepers were unacceptable and could constitute war crimes under international law
