The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that performances and screenplays generated using artificial intelligence will not be eligible for Oscar nominations, in a major move to preserve human contribution in the awards race.
New rules state that only real, human performers, not AI avatars, qualify for the film industry’s top honours, and that screenplays must be written by a person rather than a chatbot.
The decision comes days after an AI version of Val Kilmer was unveiled to an audience of cinema owners, a year after the Top Gun star’s death.
The project was developed with the support of the actor’s family, who granted access to Kilmer’s video archives, allowing his likeness to be generated at different stages of his life
