In recent years, the cost of a Disney vacation has risen sharply: a single-park Disney World day ticket surpassed $200 for the first time, in 2025, and in 2021 Disney began charging for previously free amenities such as airport shuttles and skip-the-line ride passes. In February, the company’s outgoing C.E.O., Bob Iger said, “Disney’s not just another company. Disney really is a cultural institution that has touched hundreds of millions of people.” Henry Giroux, the author of the 1999 book “The Mouse That Roared: Disney and the End of Innocence,” believes that Disney is selling “the swindle of fulfillment.” He has heard the counter-arguments from Disney fans, but he is not convinced. “I understand that it’s all laid out for them. I understand that there’s no surprises. I understand that in that standardization, there may be the thrill of not having to think or experience something new.
