I’ve had a great day on St Maarten, making it a successful start to my visit to the Caribbean part of our Kingdom.
Much of the day was devoted to the disastrous impact of hurricanes Irma and Maria, which ravaged the island in 2017, and the reconstruction process since then. I was able to see for myself how much has already been achieved. The progress is truly impressive and speaks volumes about the resilience of the people of St Maarten.
During my visit I spoke with Prime Minister Luc Mercelina, Governor Ajamu Baly, members of the cabinet and members of parliament about various key topics. In addition to the reconstruction operation, we focused on the importance of equal and respectful cooperation within the Kingdom. I also met with the Minister of Justice, Nathalie Tackling, and representatives of the police and the judiciary to discuss another key topic: safety and security on the island. It’s crucial that we keep working together on issues such as border control and organised crime.
I’m very grateful for the warm welcome I received from everyone on St Maarten. Tomorrow I’m off to Saba!
