A wonderful visit to Saba today. The island is also known as ‘the unspoilt Queen’. And rightly so, for its natural beauty is unparalleled. As is the determination to preserve it for future generations.
It’s good to see how much work is being done on Saba. The construction of the new, hurricane-proof seaport (Black Rocks Harbour) is particularly striking.
During my visit to the Saba Enrichment Centre in St. Johns, a school complex and community centre where people can come together in an accessible setting, I experienced that however small the island may be, the sense of community is strong. And at the Saba Cares Nursing Home, I had the honour of handing out gifts to all the mothers and grandmothers in the care home on Mother’s Day.
Naturally we had various government consultations on the programme too. I spoke with Governor Johnson, the island council and the executive council about issues such as Saba’s connectivity, combating crime, climate adaptation and the cost of living.
Many thanks to everyone on Saba who helped make my visit a success. Next stop: St Eustatius!
